Chapter Thirty-Seven

The next hours passed in a blur. We were fed before we helped where we were needed. Adam and I helped with the injured, and when there was no one left to help we moved on to the food stands, where people were constantly getting what they asked for. Rowan and I stole moments for ourselves. Tucked away in the dark of the train carts or in the tunnels. In a low voice, she told me about how she found out that she liked girls and her experience in the matter. Each time we were alone I got a little bolder. In the dark, I dared to reach for her hand or touch her face. Every time, heat seared through my fingertips, and I wanted to be close to her. Still, I didn’t dare kiss her, and she didn’t kiss me again.

Every now and again a runner would come, and both Adam and Rowan would push me to join the meetings, but I always refused. I still hadn’t made up my mind about helping the Council. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized I had the upper hand. The Council needed me to make the people listen to them. It wasn’t cold, all the bodies made sure the temperature was high enough, but somehow the darkness made us feel alone.

We weren’t used to it.

In the Domes, there was always the purple light of the coils. Now the only light came from goggles, masks or glasses. The light from the outside was pale blue, but not enough to light the cave. For the first time in our lives, we saw a normal night.

The thought made me shiver in both excitement and fear.

A shadow moved behind me in the glass, and Rowan wrapped her arms around my waist. I stiffened, unused to the touch, then relaxed into her. It was still weird for me, but it also made me feel warm and safe. Like I wasn’t as alone in the night anymore.

She smelled like sweat and metal.

“Tired?” she asked, before yawning.

I answered her yawn with my own before smiling. She smiled back, hugged me a bit tighter, then released me. Taking my hand, she lead me toward the train carts. I knew some of the Steamers had chosen
